A welder who leaves one employer and takes several months to secure work with another may arrive at the new job with an expired certification — even if the original record showed no gaps at the prior employer. A certification card issued by a third-party certifying body shows an expiration date tied to the certifying body's own renewal cycle, a certification number, and the scope of the qualification as the certifying body has recorded it. The card does not show the specific project history, the volume of welds performed, or the employer's internal attestation log. A card that is current with the certifying body may still be insufficient for a project that requires a fresher test date than the card's expiration allows.
Neither document shows defect rates, inspection outcomes, or the quality of welds produced during the attested period. A welder whose work has generated repeated rejections under radiographic or ultrasonic testing may hold a fully current certification record, because the renewal mechanism tracks practice continuity — not weld quality. Quality outcomes are tracked separately through nondestructive examination reports and weld rejection logs, which are distinct records maintained under the project's quality-control system rather than under the certification standard.
When a certification expires and a new test is taken, the new WPQ supersedes the old one for the tested variables. The prior record is not deleted, but it is no longer operative.
